ABOUT INNOCENCE PROJECT DELAWARE…

Innocence Project Delaware, established in 2018, is the state's only organization focused exclusively on addressing and preventing wrongful convictions. Our mission is to secure justice for individuals wrongfully imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. Our holistic approach encompasses forensic testing, case investigations, expert consultations, and a dedicated legal team committed to exonerating innocent Delawareans. IPD’s mission is driven by four key goals:

Client Advocacy: We investigate claims of actual innocence and provide free legal representation to individuals wrongfully convicted and imprisoned in Delaware.

Student Training: We offer clinical education and hands-on experience to students in law and criminal justice, helping train the next generation of justice-focused advocates.

Public Education: We raise awareness about wrongful convictions, policy reform, and developments within the criminal legal system.

Pro Bono Recruitment: We work to recruit, train, and collaborate with Delaware lawyers and law firms who assist us on a pro bono basis.

Wilmington City Council’s Recognition of Innocence Project Delaware

At Innocence Project Delaware, we strive to educate the community about wrongful convictions and how we seek to address them.

On September 7, 2023, we were honored to receive a Resolution from the Wilmington City Council in recognition of our work.

We are so grateful to have their support & look forward to working together to help provide justice for wrongfully convicted individuals within our city and state.

On October 2, 2025 we were honored to be recognized by the Wilmington City Council again on the 12th Annual International Wrongful Conviction Day. The Council affirmed the urgent need to confront wrongful convictions in Delaware and acknowledged the work of Innocence Project Delaware to free the innocent and expose injustice. This resolution honors the thousands of people who have been exonerated and freed nationwide, including the five Delawareans whose lives were profoundly impacted by wrongful conviction.

We are especially grateful to Council Member Shané N. Darby, who sponsored this resolution and continues to be a powerful champion for justice. As we carry this fight forward, we are reminded that wrongful convictions inflict immeasurable human, emotional, and societal costs—and we remain steadfast in our commitment to correcting these injustices.

We often host community educational initiatives and fundraising events. After a benefit concert in May 2025, The Mill released this article about our work, where you may read more about our mission.
